Over the past three years, Benchmark Designs, in collaboration with Swansea University and Chartwells, has worked to transform the catering spaces on the Singleton and Bay Campuses. The most notable project was the renovation of the first floor of Fulton House on the Singleton Campus. Fulton House, a listed building at the heart of Singleton Campus, was home to the Refectory, a once vibrant double-height space designed for dining and social interactions. Over time, it had lost its charm and purpose, necessitating a transformation to better serve the evolving needs of the student community. Furthermore, the servery, which had been closed for years, was reopened as initially intended. An underused bar and social space adjacent to the Refectory were redesigned into a Games Room reminiscent of the original 1960s concept.

Preserving the Refectory’s heritage features, like the timber floor, panelling, lighting, and artworks, was essential due to its heritage status. The design successfully combined a modern aesthetic with a nod to its 1960s origins. Technological advancements and changing student habits informed the design, with updated food offerings and multiple ordering channels by Chartwells. A large double-sided screen was integrated for university messaging and events.

The furniture scheme was crafted to encourage student socialisation and accommodate various activities. It introduced vibrant colours and textures while addressing practical needs, such as power supplies for studying and working. By using Huddle to create booths and bay seating, has created distinct zones for dining, work, and meetings. Our Relic table, paired with benches and stools ensured ample seating with controlled flexibility.

In summary, Benchmark Designs, Swansea University, and Chartwells successfully breathed new life into the Refectory, preserving its heritage while adapting it to modern requirements. This transformation has provided a purposeful and versatile space for both students and staff, greatly enhancing the overall campus experience.
