Wellbeing in the workplace

Choosing furniture for Workplace Wellbeing: The WELL Building Standard

The WELL Building Standard™ is a performance-based system that is responsible for measuring, certifying, and monitoring all features of a built environment.

From the construction of the building down to its furnishings, all aspects of a building are measured for their impact on human health and wellbeing.

To achieve the WELL Building Standard™, 10 WELL Concepts must be met: Air, Water, Nourishment, Light, Movement, Thermal Comfort, Sound, Materials, Mind and Community.

How to choose furniture that contributes to the WELL Building Standard™

The WELL Building Standard™ offers a thorough framework for testing and measuring how a building is designed from a ‘People First’ perspective.

Whether your goal is to achieve the WELL Building Standard™, or to simply put more emphasis on workplace wellbeing, there are furniture choices you can make to help assist this.

Let’s take a closer look at how the WELL Concepts of Movement, Light, Materials & Mind can be applied to your furniture choices.

Movement

The WELL Movement concept promotes physical activity in everyday life through environmental design, policies and programs to ensure that movement opportunities are integrated into the fabric of our culture, buildings and communities.

Feature: Ergonomic Workstation Design

To reduce the risk of physical strain on the body, this feature requires the provision of ergonomic workstation furnishings to accommodate all users, that support neutral body positions for seated and standing work and provide opportunities to alternate between seated and standing positions.

Materials

The WELL Materials concept aims to reduce human exposure, whether direct or through environmental contamination, to chemicals that may impact health during the construction, remodelling, furnishing and operation of buildings.

Feature: Volatile Organic Compound Reductions

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) encompass a wide group of substances of both natural and artificial origins that are emitted as gases from solids or liquids.

Some VOCs are harmful to human health while some are known or suspected carcinogens, they may also have a wide range of health effects from nose, eye and throat irritation, headaches and nausea, to liver kidney and central nervous system damage.

This WELL feature requires adherence to emission thresholds for materials placed inside the building envelope.

All of our products are tested for their VOC offset levels to reduce their impact on indoor air quality. They are certified SCS Indoor Advantage Gold.

Mind

The WELL Mind concept promotes mental health through policy, program and design strategies that seek to address the diverse factors that influence cognitive and emotional well-being.

To alleviate mental fatigue and stress, this feature requires the provision of spaces that promote a restorative environment and encourage relief from mental fatigue and stress.

Feature 2: Enhanced Access to Nature

This WELL feature requires the integration of nature throughout the project, as well as design that celebrates the project’s unique identity and inspires human delight.
